New Directions Publishing is an independent publishing house founded in 1936 by James Laughlin. The press is based in New York City and is known for publishing works of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction by both established and emerging authors. New Directions has a reputation for publishing literary works of high quality and for promoting avant-garde and experimental literature. The press has published works by many notable authors such as James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Vladimir Nabokov, and Jack Kerouac, among others. New Directions has also been instrumental in introducing international authors such as Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, and Yoko Tawada to American readers. New Directions has received many accolades over the years, and several of its authors have won major literary awards such as the Nobel Prize, National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize.
